Calling All Cars

I'm getting tired of not having a desk. Is there anyone around New Haven with a car who wouldn't mind driving me over to Ikea sometime in the next few days to pick up a desk and some drawers?

Thought I'd ask.

Bwahaha

For reference, Lynchburg is a small town in rural Virginia notable only for being home to three colleges: Randolph-Macon Woman's College (Randy Mac), the Virginia Military Institute, and Jerry Falwell's Liberty University.

The talk Richard Dawkins gave there last year (reading from his new book) was cool, but the Q&A afterwards is frickin' awesome.

http://video.google.com/googleplayer.swf?docId=-8033327978006186584&hl=en

I am thoroughly amused.
I can has apartment

I am movz0red!

You should all come visit me and my lovely roommates in our shiny new apartment. It's shiny, and it still needs a name.

Special thanks to Lynn, Max, Ben, and the Beer family, whose powers combined made a three-day job take just ten hours.

I'm a little tired, even so.

Airport fun

This weekend is the busiest of the year for airports. Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport is the busiest airport in the country, in terms of both number of flights and number of passengers that go through each year.

This morning, it took me 55 minutes to get from my house clear across town to my gate. That's 30 minutes going from the parking lot, through the baggage check-in line (oh yes, I checked bags), through security, and through the "transportation lobby" to the C concourse. The longest I spent in line was 15 minutes to get a sandwich at the cafe 10 yards down the concourse (not included in the above figures). I started packing today at 11:20 and still made my 1:00 flight with half an hour to spare.

Then I got to LaGuardia. It took me 40 minutes to get out of the airport, even though this simply involved walking about a hundred yards to the terminal, picking up my bags, and catching a bus. It took me an hour and a half to get from the arrival gate to Grand Central, much less where I was actually going. (Note: I vastly prefer LaGuardia to JFK.)

Atlanta's airport is designed for maximum efficiency from the interstate exit on in (and back out). So tell me, peanut gallery, why does it have such a bad reputation?

Poll for the masses:

I will be moving a week from yesterday (on the 29th). I will have a large number of boxes and assorted containers of stuff. I will however also have the so-far namesless Object--the pump organ thing. (For those who helped me move it into my current apartment, take heart; it's much lighter once I take out the keyboard.) The largest piece of this thing is 53" x 49" x 24", which is just barely too big to fit any anything but the very largest of minivans.

So does anybody have or have access to an enormous minivan, a pick-up truck or similar? I rented a Dodge Grand Caravan to move it before.

Alternatively, is there anyone else going to be moving around that time that would like to split the cost of renting a minivan from Enterprise? It's 54.99 a day for Yalies. If so, let me know now so I can make the reservation. I think I can also use this free upgrade I have lying around to get an even better deal.

Lastly, in the theme of this month, if anyone can be around to help me move, that will be much appreciated. I don't have as much stuff as redswami or emilymorgan, so it shouldn't take long, but it's still a hell of a lot for one or even three people. As per usual, dinner's on me.

PS My current apartment's on the first floor, and I will be moving into one of very few dorms at Yale that has an elevator. I'm moving in a day early, so the elevator shouldn't even be terrifically crowded. So don't worry about having to lift heavy stuff to the fourth floor. Yay!

Update: I will be allowed into the dorm starting at 4:00. Therefore, the plan: start loading the truck at 3:30, drive it over, unload. Depending on just how much of lisa_bee's stuff we move at the same time (this seems to me like a very good idea, though I don't know her plans), we can probably be done well in time for dinner.

(Budget is awesome! Thanks to you lovely people for recommending them.)
